20ft Refrigerated Container Dimensions

Shipping Containers of Birmingham supplies high-specification 20ft refrigerated containers (reefers) for static storage and international transport. These units provide precise temperature control for perishable goods, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals.

A 20ft reefer offers the portability of a standard shipping container with the functionality of a walk-in cold store. Whether you need to buy a refrigerated container for a permanent kitchen expansion or hire one for an event, we ensure you get the right specification.

Dimensions and Capacity

Refrigerated containers differ slightly from standard dry units. The internal insulation and the refrigeration machinery reduce the internal volume. You must account for this when calculating your payload.

Key Features and Specifications

Our 20ft refrigerated containers are built to maintain a set temperature regardless of external weather conditions. They are wind and watertight, secure, and durable.

  • Temperature Control: Capable of maintaining temperatures typically between -25°C and +25°C. This suits both frozen goods and chilled produce.
  • Food-Grade Interior: The interior walls are stainless steel or high-grade, food-safe panels, making them easy to clean and compliant with hygiene standards.
  • T-Bar Flooring: The floor features aluminium T-bars. This design allows cold air to circulate beneath the cargo, ensuring an even temperature throughout the load.
  • Insulation: Heavy-duty insulation foam is sandwiched between the outer steel and inner walls to prevent heat transfer.

Power Requirements

Unlike standard 20ft shipping containers, reefers require an active power supply. They do not run on standard domestic plugs.

The machinery typically requires a 3-phase, 380/440V power supply with a 32-amp 5-pin plug. You must ensure your site has the appropriate electrical infrastructure in place before delivery. For static storage where 3-phase power is unavailable, you may need to hire a generator.

Comparing Sizes: 20ft vs 40ft

The 40ft refrigerated container offers significantly more volume and is often cheaper per square foot. However, the 20ft unit is the preferred choice for sites with limited space. A 20ft unit fits into a standard car parking footprint (approx 20ft x 8ft), whereas a 40ft unit requires double the length and significantly more space for the delivery truck to manoeuvre.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I plug a reefer container into a normal socket?

No. Shipping container refrigeration units run on a 3-phase marine industrial supply (380/440V). You cannot use a standard domestic 240V socket. If you lack 3-phase power, you will need a generator or a professional electrical conversion.

Do you sell new and used refrigerated containers?

Yes. We supply new and used containers. New units are in pristine condition and offer the longest lifespan. Used units are fully operational and serviced (PTI checked), but may show cosmetic wear.

How much noise does the unit make?

Modern reefer machinery is relatively quiet but does produce a hum similar to that of a large commercial air conditioning unit. You should consider this when placing the unit near residential property lines.

Can you deliver the container to my site?

Yes. Shipping Containers of Birmingham delivers across the UK using HIAB crane vehicles. We need hard-standing ground and sufficient overhead clearance to lift the container into place. Check our delivery guide or contact us if you are unsure about access.
