Stack of 20ft Containers

20ft Shipping Container

The 20ft shipping container is the global standard for cargo transport and static storage. Shipping Containers of Birmingham supplies these robust units to businesses and individuals across the UK. Whether you need to buy a container for a construction site or hire a container for temporary storage, the 20ft unit offers the perfect balance of capacity and footprint.

We manufacture these containers from high-quality Corten steel, which resists corrosion and withstands harsh weather. They are designed to protect goods during international sea voyages, making them equally effective for secure land-based storage.

Understanding the exact dimensions is vital for planning your site layout and loading requirements. The 20ft container fits within a standard parking space, though you must allow extra width for delivery.

Key Features

Our 20ft containers are built for durability and security. Key specifications include:

  • Wind and Watertight: Heavy-duty rubber door seals prevent water ingress, keeping contents dry.
  • Secure Locking System: Robust steel locking bars and a factory-fitted lock box (cowl) protect your padlock from bolt cutters.
  • Marine Plywood Flooring: The 27mm thick floor can withstand heavy static loads and forklift traffic.
  • Ventilation: Small vents reduce condensation buildup without compromising weatherproofing.

Condition Grades: New vs Used

We supply containers in two primary conditions. Choosing the right grade depends on your budget and how the unit will be used.

New (One-Trip) Containers

These units have completed one journey from the factory in China to the UK. They are in excellent condition with clean paintwork and pristine floors. They are the best choice for high-visibility locations or long-term conversion projects.

Used Containers

Used units have spent years in the shipping network. They will show dents, rust patches, and surface repairs. However, Shipping Containers of Birmingham guarantees that its shipping containers are wind- and watertight. These are the most cost-effective option for industrial storage where function outweighs aesthetics.

Delivery Requirements

We deliver 20ft containers using a rigid HIAB vehicle (a truck with an onboard crane). The driver lifts the container off the side of the truck.

  • Access: The truck is approximately 30ft long and 9ft wide. It needs ample turning space.
  • Ground: Delivery requires hard-standing ground, such as concrete or tarmac. We cannot drive on grass or soil.
  • Clearance: You must ensure the lifting area is free from overhead cables and tree branches.

If you require more space, consider the 40ft shipping container, which offers double the internal volume.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a 20ft container cost?

Prices change weekly based on global steel prices and shipping rates. Used containers are significantly cheaper than new one-trip units. Delivery costs depend on your distance from our depot. Use our quote form for an accurate price.

Do I need planning permission?

Shipping containers are usually classed as temporary structures. You generally do not need permission for short-term use on industrial land. However, for permanent placement in residential areas or conservation zones, you should check with your local council.

How secure are they?

Very secure. The steel structure is difficult to breach. When paired with a high-security padlock inside the lock box, the container becomes a safe vault for tools and machinery.

Can I paint the container?

Yes. If you buy a container, you can paint it any colour. We also offer a repainting service before delivery. If you hire a container, you must return it in its original condition.
