Storage Containers for hire in Alfreton

ISO Standards and Quality Assurance

We do not supply "scrap" units. To ensure safety and longevity, our fleet adheres to strict International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) specifications:

  • ISO 668 (Dimensions): Ensures our 20ft and 40ft units are compatible with standard transport logistics and fit correctly on Hiab delivery vehicles.
  • ISO 1496 (Structural Integrity): Specifies the testing requirements for load-bearing and stacking. This ensures that even our used units are structurally sound and safe for static storage.

Condition Grades

  • New (One-Trip): Manufactured in China and shipped to the UK with a single cargo load. These features include pristine paintwork and factory-fitted lockboxes. Ideal for visible locations like Alfreton High Street retail sites or schools.
  • Used (Wind and Watertight): These units have served in global trade for 10-15 years. While they may show cosmetic wear (dents/rust), we guarantee they are "Wind and Water-tight." This is the standard choice for industrial storage at Amber Business Centre or agricultural use in the surrounding Derbyshire countryside.

Alfreton Site Access Guide: Hiab Delivery

We deliver using Hiab vehicles; trucks fitted with an onboard hydraulic crane to offload the container. Alfreton presents a mix of modern industrial infrastructure and historic town roads. Successful delivery depends on selecting the right vehicle.

1. Selecting the Right Vehicle

  • Articulated Hiab (40ft Containers):
    • Best for: Cotes Park, Somercotes, and Meadow Lane industrial zones.
    • Requirements: These vehicles are approx. 60-65ft long. They require a massive 100ft-110ft straight-line clearance to park and offload. They generally cannot navigate residential cul-de-sacs or the tighter turnings off King Street.
  • Rigid Hiab (20ft Containers):
    • Best for: Residential driveways, schools, and town centre locations.
    • Requirements: Approx. 30-35ft long (similar to a refuse truck). Requires approx. 60ft straight-line clearance. This is the recommended vehicle for sites with restricted turning circles.

2. Ground Preparation

The container must sit on "hard standing" ground. A loaded Hiab vehicle can weigh over 30 tonnes. We strictly cannot lift onto grass, soft soil, or mud, as the vehicle's stabiliser legs may sink, risking the truck toppling. Concrete, tarmac, or compacted hardcore surfaces are essential.

3. Overhead Hazards

The crane arm lifts upwards and outwards. You must check your site for:

  • Power Lines: Drivers require a safety clearance of at least 20 metres from live overhead cables.
  • Tree Canopies: Common in rural outskirts like Oakerthorpe or Swanwick. Ensure branches are trimmed back to allow the crane arm to extend.

Planning Permission in Amber Valley

Shipping containers are generally classified as temporary structures. However, regulations can vary within the Amber Valley Borough Council region.

  • Industrial Estates: Siting a container within an established industrial curtilage (e.g., Cotes Park) usually falls under Permitted Development rights, provided it is not stacked or obstructing operations.
  • Residential & Conservation Areas: If you plan to place a container in a residential garden or near a listed building for more than 28 days, planning permission is often required.

We recommend consulting the Amber Valley Planning Portal before ordering if you are unsure.

Hire vs Buy: The Economic Breakdown

Deciding between hiring and buying depends on your project duration:

  • Short-Term (Under 18 Months): Hiring is the most economical choice. It preserves your cash flow and includes the flexibility of hiring the unit when needed. Ideal for renovation projects or seasonal retail stock.
  • Long-Term (18 Months+): Buying a shipping container typically offers a better return on investment. You own the asset outright, allowing for modifications (e.g., adding lighting or shelving) and avoiding ongoing rental invoices.
